Switzerland: Escape to its fairytale lakes
Although Switzerland has no sea, the dozens of lakes scattered throughout the country create fairytale scenery. These lakes are either next to snow-capped mountains or picturesque towns and villages. Take a look at a map of Switzerland, and you will understand that, although without sea, this country has a lot of water – dozens of lakes create magnificent scenery next to the cities and settlements of the country: from those at the foothills of the Alps and reflect in their waters the snow-capped peaks, up to the lakes in sunny Ticino, in the south of the country.
In the various cantons of Switzerland (26 in total) that are its administrative subdivisions, the following (and other lakes) for centuries “enchant” everyone who visits them. But let’s see in detail which they are.
Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne is located in central Switzerland and is the fourth largest in the country. Steep mountain peaks dominate the “lake of the four cantons” (this lake contains 4 of the 26 cantons of Switzerland!). The Lake has a unique shape, with turns, and extends from the city of Lucerne to the mountains.
To admire the beautiful view, take a walk to the Pilatus, Rigi, or Stanserhorn mountains. When the clouds subside, from steep slopes and other places, you will see a fantastic mosaic of green slopes and bright waters at the foothills of icy mountain peaks. All seasons “paint” the area with beautiful colors. Along the shores of the lake, you will find various resorts, which are accessible by boat.
Lake Lugano
Lake Lugano is located in southeastern Switzerland, on the border with Italy, between Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. Popular tourist destinations on or near the lake are Mount Brè to the east, Mount San Salvatore to the west of Lugano, and Mount Generoso to the lake’s southeast shore. The Monte San Giorgio World Heritage Site is located south of the lake.
The city of Lugano is distinguished for the combination of Italian style and Swiss efficiency and is worth a visit. There you will see many restaurants, which when the weather is good, they take their tables outside; picturesque streets and squares with blooming flowers, but also several museums about arts, history, etc.
Lake Brienz
Lake Brienz is located north of the Alps in the canton of Bern, and the traditional village of the same name is located at its eastern end. There you will feel that time has frozen, seeing the steam train and the wood carving workshops, but also the beautiful wooden houses with the flowered courtyards.
To the west of the lake is the Bödeli area – a strip of land that separates it from neighboring Lake Thun. The village of Bönigen is located in front of the Bödeli site. Also, the largest resort, Interlaken, is located just west, between the two lakes and is a well-known and essential tourist destination in the mountainous area of the canton of Bernese Oberland, mainly because of the beautiful view and is a transport hub to the surrounding mountains, primarily the Jungfrau massif and the lakes of the wider area.
Lake Geneva
Geneva – the largest lake in Western Europe – stretches like a giant in the French-speaking canton of Vaud in southwestern Switzerland. The southern part of this lake belongs to France.
It is known to most as Lake Geneva, but also as Lake Lehman, and on its northern shores lies the elegant city of Lausanne and several smaller, picturesque cities and beautiful vineyards that reach the steep slopes of the Lavaux region. From their grapes, you can taste some of the region’s fine wines and visit various wineries.
Vaud Alps
In its southeast corner, the canton extends into the Vaud Alps. This is a paradise for those who want to hikers in spring and summer and for skiers in winter. In the Alps, guests can spend a fantastic winter vacation in one of the hundreds of resorts that exist there and live a unique experience. Modern facilities, endless services, and activities await you on that side of the Alps.
